Partnership for a Tobacco Free Cerro Gordo County
Meeting Summary  September 15, 2009
Location:  American Cancer Society Office

Attendees: Ed Walthall, Diane Murphy, Darcy Skellenger, Leslie Smith, Michele Appelgate, Penny McCaslin, Alison Roe, Liz Conley, Andrea Goedderz, Penny Bennett, Melissa Deckard, Donna Orton, Carol Brown, Sara Udelhofen, Tammy Bryant

1.  Welcome and Introductions 

2.  New Roles:  Donna Orton volunteered to serve as Summary Scriber.

3.  Report of Grant Happenings

  • Tammy addressed the change to quarterly meeting rather than monthly meetings.
  • Tammy also informed the group that there would no longer be 6th grade tobacco education. Schools were informed of this change last year.  Schools can still have access to any equipment (lungs, Smokey Sue, videos, etc).  Also notes are available to support presentations but no power points are available at this time.
  • At the June meeting, grant goals and objectives were distributed. If you need copies, contact Tammy.

4.  PIO-Media Update - Michele

  • Michele distributed handouts with information that is being used on Channel 4 re:tobacco prevention and smoke free home emphasis, since this year’s emphasis will be directed towards the home. Slides will change each quarter.
  • Media budget last year was $750 and has been increased to $1200 for this year. 
  • Letters to the editors will also be sent quarterly and press releases will be made in alignment with the quarterly meeting dates.
  • Tammy mentioned that a “smoke free” pledge program will also be embraced and will have stickers to help promote smoke free environments. 

5. JEL Happenings

  • Tammy reported that one student from MCHS, Katie Sheldon, had attended theSummit and is putting together a PowerPoint slide show of the event. Tammy also presented on Smoke free policy. Tammy commented that this was one of the best Summit’s in the last eight years. Victor DiNoble, the person who was one of the first whistle blowers against Philip Morris, was a featured speaker.
  • Tammy also stated that 20 new students have enrolled at MCHS.
  • Newman: is a building year. She will meet with Students next week.
  • Ventura – start meeting next week. Penny was at registration and a few students expressed interest, primarily from the junior class. 
  • Clear Lake – has a meeting set as well.

6.  Smoke Free Violations

  • Identification of some problematic areas but emphasis on the need to continue to  educate.

7.  Schedule for quarter meetings is as follows:

  • December 15, 2009
  • March 16, 2010
  • June 15, 2010

8-9.  Discussion/Brainstorming

  • What can we do to best reach the Public?
  • We need to develop partnerships. Collaborate with day cares, driving schools, Realtors (to promote smoke free homes)
  • What "draws" can lead individuals to sign smoke free pledges?
  • Sarah mentioned coupling with existing activities (Upcoming at Kaplan –
  • Homeless/sleeping in boxes), couple with Relay for Life activities.
  • Discussion regarding Mark Newcome at Waldorf and the possibility of producing a video of Smokey Sue to provide to schools for individual use. Also discussion regarding placement on web site and “You Tube."

10.  Latest Tobacco News

  • Tammy mentioned that Avis/Hertz are going smoke free.  Fine $250 for violations. Other additional cities have also gone smoke free in Texas and Alaska.
  • Tammy also addressed a handout “Partnership for Prevention” re: The Joint commissions’ initiatives regarding four new measures related to tobacco use and dependence.  If adopted, these measure will require all hospitals to assess all patients 12 years and older regarding tobacco use, and to offer current tobacco uses counseling, medications and limited follow-up. Public opinion is being solicited.
  • Tammy also provided information regarding the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Workshop to be held in Cedar Rapids on October 15. Presenter will be Thomas Gauvin, a tobacco treatment specialist at the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center.

11.  Partnership Happenings

  • Tammy, PH informed the group the “Quit” cards are available bilingually.
  • Penny, MC Park and Rec:  Parks/Recs – director is resigning, progressing as usual.
  • Carol, MCYTF:  Getting Voyagers ready to go, doing ETOH compliance checks,        Leadership classes are going.
  • Andrea, ACS – had a fantastic year, Daffodil sale went well, Relay for Life, Breast CA walk, many successful events. 
  • Liz,YMCA – are now directors of Sugar Plum Preschool (Trinity Church)Strengthening Families emphasis – grant from Principal to support this program. Also have Celebrate Families for younger children.
  • Andrea, ISU Extension – new director is learning the ropes. County Fair has been     moved up two weeks.
  • Michele, PH – e-news letter from Cerro Gordo Public Health.
  • Sarah, Kaplan – new term starts tomorrow; Homeless/sleeping in boxes  Activities, Health Fair-November 11.
  • Diane, Girl Scouts – program books have been distributed.
  • Ed, Police Department – National Night Out, Domestic Abuse Awareness month is next month, Continuing to do tobacco compliance checks.
  • Donna, NIACC – off to a good start, Pond Fest  - could distribute brochures.
  • Tammy – JEL:  try to find an adult within the school to help with this programIs currently working with a BSN student to serve as advisor to student events.
